In one of the most gripping scenes in the Torah, the Gentile prophet Bilaam has been summoned to curse the assembled Israelites on behalf of Balak, the King of Edom. Protesting that he can only say what he is instructed by God, Bilaam nonetheless ascends the heights of a nearby mountain, to get a commanding view of Israel - all the better to curse them. Each time he attempts to curse the people, and each time he is overwhelmed by God's mandate to bless. Finally, in a moment of personal envy and hope, Bilaam blurts out, "Let me die the death of the righteous. May my fate be like theirs!"

In the realm of biology and chemistry, interactions lead to further interactions, as the energy of one unit creates the response of the next, which in turn launches yet another process. Everything is connected, and everything is part of a series of responses and influences. What goes around comes around.

This is the age of vicarious virtue: all of us prefer to continue living our lives in much the same way we always have, and all of us want our leaders to adhere to the standard of our words.  In that way, we get to enjoy our own laxity while still claiming credit for the morality of our ideals. Our mouths toot one thing and our deeds blare a different, more gaudy, tune.

Well over a decade ago, my last-surviving grandmother passed away. A week or so after our period of mourning ended, my mother sent me some of her furniture, figuring (correctly) that I and my wife could use it in setting up our home. As the movers carried in my grandmother's furniture, I had an eerie sense that something wasn't right. This, after all, was hers, not mine. She should have it, not me. I realized then, in a more concrete way than before, that we really never own the things around us. We borrow them for a while, and ultimately we return them.

In the famous description of the Woman of Valor, the Book of Proverbs praises her by saying that “she opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is a Torah of love.” High praise indeed, but it raises a curious dilemma. If she speaks a Torah of hesed, of steadfast love or of lovingkindness, does that imply that there is a Torah that is not a Torah of love. Is there a Torah of hate?

Each Sunday morning, some TV preachers hold up Bibles in their hands and presume that ultimate authority can be lifted straight out of that book.  They argue that the Bible says it, so that settles it, as though the presence of the book renders human input unnecessary.  Many Jews have adopted that same approach, insisting that “Torah” Judaism is one in which the Torah has the final word—specifically that the p’shat (contextual meaning) is final.  Thus, anyone who acts against the p'shat of the Torah is violating the will of God, and thereby going against the teachings of Juda

Last week, the Torah recounted the grisly story of the sudden death of Aaron’s two sons, Nadav and Avihu.  It seems that the consecration of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) had barely been completed when these two kohanim decided to violate the established rules for the service of God and instead to willfully impose their own offering and their own mode of offering it.  In response to their “alien fire”, God engulfs the two men in a fire from heaven, instantly striking both down.

Our leaders often have a sense of their own dignity and self-worth that is far removed from the estimation of the common folk. Periodically, in the United States, we endure the eruption of this dichotomy as legislators try to justify a wide range of privileges and benefits that the rest of us--with much smaller incomes--don't enjoy. Writing checks when they don't have any money, free health club membership, free mailings, cheap haircuts, and a slew of other privileges make them look more like royalty than like elected representatives of the people.

We live in an age of vigorous political debate, as liberals and conservatives present their views of the world and their prescriptions for how to redress our problems in books, articles, and speeches all over the country. With thoughtful and enthusiastic partisans on both sides, it just may be the first time in recent history in which Americans are actually taking political thought seriously. Perhaps because the stakes are so high, perhaps because there is no real consensus, how we understand the issues confronting us has important ramifications for the future we leave to our children.
