With Parashat K’doshim, we begin what the rabbis of the Midrash recognized to be a distinct section of the Torah, "the section dealing with holiness".  In this estimation, they anticipated modern scholarship, which also recognizes a distinct "Holiness Code" within the various strands that comprise our Torah.  Characteristic of this portion of Scripture is the repeated injunction, "You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.

Modern men and women like to pretend that we have a direct pipeline into reality that we know, in an absolute and ultimate way, about ourselves, about the world around us, about true wisdom. Forgetting that previous generations were equally sure about the truths they “knew”, that the earth was flat, that the universe was a few thousand years old, that women were inferior to men, and that we now view their certainties with scorn, we presume that our most cherished verities will last forever.

The rabbis of the Talmud and Midrash were very sensitive readers of Torah.  After all, they studied these sacred words day and night, always seeking new interpretations, novel implications of our special love relationship with God.  In the process of their studies, they uncovered nuances and insights that can continue to guide us, their descendents, on a path of righteous and holy living.

Our age is one of hand wringing. We fear for the survival of the Jewish people and our ancient civilization, and establish funds and committees devoted to the noble work of continuity. We read article after article predicting the extinction of the American Jewish community, chastising us for our lethargy, our tedium, and our mediocrity. Plans to turn our people around—through funding trips to Israel, use of Eastern meditation technique, strict observance of Jewish law (or its elimination entirely)—all promise to save us from our greatest contemporary enemy: ourselves.

In every generation, some people are so certain that their view of what is right is absolutely right that they are ready not only to dedicate their own lives to their ideals, but they are also prepared to coerce others to follow in their footsteps. Not only religious leaders, but political activists of both the Left and the Right see their own viewpoint as objectively ordained and seem willing to banish those who dissent from their views beyond the pale of humanity itself.

“Great is human dignity, for it overrides a prohibition in the Torah,” is a famous assertion found over and over again the Talmud, holding out a challenge and an opportunity for all of us to prioritize people over rules, and to elevate human dignity over systemic consistency. How easy it is to allow ideology to obliterate human worth, to permit devotion to an ideal to render invisible the individual before us.

One of the debates raging through the various contemporary trends within Judaism is the issue of revelation: in what way did God make divine will known at Mt. Sinai, and in what way do we come to know God's will for today?

At one extreme are those who claim that each and every word in the Torah is literally God's words.  Not only the words of the Torah, but subsequent prophecies by Israel's prophets, and subsequent rulings by rabbinic sages are all understood as being given by God at Mt. Sinai to Moses and the assembled throng.

A story is told of a man who possessed a deep faith in God. He was traveling on an ocean liner when the ship sank. The frenzied crew offered him a life vest, which he declined, saying, “God will save me.” They offered him a seat in a life raft, and he said no, insisting, “God will save me.” The ocean liner sank, and the passengers who could departed on the life raft. As he paddled in the water, he was approached first by a Navy frigate, then by a submarine, and finally by a fishing vessel.
