This three-part series delves into the rich history of Jews in Ireland, from their earliest recorded presence in 1079 CE to the evolving Irish-Jewish experience of the 21st century.
This session traces the early Jewish presence in Ireland, from its first mention in 1079 to the establishment of Dublin’s Jewish community in 1892. Key moments include the medieval protections under Henry III, the 1290 expulsion, and the eventual reintegration of Jews under Cromwell, alongside the rise of Dublin’s “Little Jerusalem.” We’ll explore how these events shaped a unique Irish-Jewish identity, contextualized through my own family’s multi-generational story.

Dr. Melanie Brown is a music graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and has an M.A. in Composition from NUI Maynooth. In 2011 she was awarded her PhD in Ethnomusicology at the University of Limerick. She is currently a Local Centre examiner for the Royal Irish Academy of Music, while concurrently teaching a course on Jewish liturgical music at the World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and directing the Irish Jewish Oral History Project under the auspices of the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland.
