Frequently Asked Questions

    General

  • Why is it called: On One Foot?

Two thousand years ago, a newcomer came to a great rabbi named Hillel and asked: "Can you teach me everything about Judaism while I stand on one foot?" Hillel responded: "What is hateful to you, don't do to your neighbor. The rest is commentary. Now, go and study!"

On One Foot is a streaming video taste of Intro to Judaism, created by American Jewish University. In three hours, we aim to introduce you to some of Judaism's most important ideas, traditions, and values. You can't quite watch it all while standing on one foot… but it's as close as we could get!

  • What's included in On One Foot?

On One Foot includes nineteen video lessons with Rabbi Adam Greenwald, the Director of the Maas Center for Jewish Journeys at American Jewish University. In addition to videos, there are in-depth PDFs and other resources for each chapter, as well as super valuable downloadable bonus materials like our Shabbat at Home and Hanukkah at Home guides. You are also invited to our monthly, live Q&As, our private social media group where you can ask your questions anytime, and even make a 1:1 appointment with a rabbi.

  • Can I convert to Judaism just by watching this class?

No, but it's an excellent place to start! Judaism is all about community, and we believe that studying alone is no replacement for gathering with a teacher and a group to explore and build relationships together. For those considering that path, On One Foot will provide you with a firm foundation and help you as take the next steps on your journey. And, you can apply 100% of your registration fee to the cost of the Miller Introduction to Judaism Program, which is the largest program in the world helping people on their journey to becoming Jewish. Check out our upcoming live classes here.

  • Are you Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, or what?

Our Program's Director (Rabbi Adam) is a Conservative rabbi, but the Intro to Judaism Program is open to the whole community. Many of our students and alums consider themselves Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, Modern Orthodox, or "Just Jewish." The course is not dogmatic. As we see it, our job is to help people become the Jews that they are meant to be in the world, rather than forcing them into any particular box or branch.

AJU’s full Intro to Judaism class is endorsed by the Rabbinical Assembly/United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism as their "highly recommended" learning program for those considering conversion.

  • What is American Jewish University?

American Jewish University (AJU) is a fully accredited university that advances and elevates the Jewish journey of individuals, organizations, and our community through excellence in scholarship, teaching, engaged conversation, and outreach. AJU is home to the Maas Center for Jewish Journeys and the Miller Intro to Judaism Program - the largest program supporting newcomers to Judaism in North America.
